Hospital for Sick Children - In-patient psychiatry.
President RNAO-CTNIG - 2002

Darka began her nursing career at the Hospital for Sick Children in 1970
after graduating from the Toronto General Hospital School of Nursing and has
worked in the Heamatology/Oncology, Chest/Cystic Fibrosis, Psychiatry
in-patient areas and Ambulatory Care in Medical, Rheumatology, Nephrology,
Endocrine and Gynecology specialties. She attended Ryerson University where
she graduated with a BScN with honours from the School of Nursing in 2001.
Darka is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the American Holistic Nurses Association,
and the Therapeutic TouchNetwork of Ontario.

Darka became interested in Complementary Therapies when she saw how well
they fit into a holistic model of care where the mindbodyspirit interconnection
is emphasized and how they enhanced healing from within. She utilizes
Therapeutic Touch, Reiki, meditation, and relaxation strategies in her nursing
practice and personal life. Her heart remains at the frontlines of nursing where
she offers Therapeutic Touch, and relaxation strategies at the bedside and to
colleagues at the Hospital for Sick Children.

In 2002, she founded the RNAO - Complementary Therapies Nurses' Interest
Group (CTNIG)  along with a dedicated group of nurses who want
Complementary Therapies recognized, incorporated, and integrated into
nursing and health care in Ontario. Darka is currently the president of the
CTNIG. She advocates for nurses to take a lead in providing Complementary Therapies
which have been within the domain of nursing for centuries and educating nurses about
Complementary Therapies so they are able to provide health care consumers accurate information
about the safety and efficacy of Complementary Therapies.
